Martyn van Hoek

Born in the South of The Netherlands, far away from big waters but always drawn to the sea. Never would I have dreamed that later I would live right on the beach, for which I'm very grateful now:) I started sailing in school camps, then windsurfing, then kiting, then surfing and finally foil surfing - which is the biggest passion I ever had. Recently I started wing foiling and I'm amazed by how much fun it its. Especially when there are some waves around:)

Questions & Answers

What other water sports do you do and how long?

I surf foil since 2 years. Before that I did 15 years of surfing, 20 years of kiting and some windsurfing too.

What do you like about wing foiling?

The smoothness, the fun factor, the ease with which you can eject yourself into a wave that would else go unridden.

How did you learn and how long did it take you to wing foil?

I did one first session on a 100 liter Appletree wing foil board and I struggled but managed to foil after 45 minutes. Then on my buddy's 137 liter F-One rocket and by then it already went smooth. The next step was the 90 liter rocket followed by the board I'm currently riding, the 60 liter F-one Rocket 5.0. The board is amazing!

What is your favorite gear combination and why?

I very much love the F-One Swing wings. They're very easy to handle and behave really well when riding waves. The F-one boards are nice too but the real game changers are the F-One Phantom Foils. I have the 1480 and 1280 for both surfing and winging and they make it soooo easy, fast, agile and fun. I ride a 75cm mast but am going to get a 95cm one too.

What was your favorite wing surfing session?

My best wing foiling session was actually yesterday:) We had light winds, the sea was clean and small waves were rolling in. It was sunny and all my buddies were out. So much fun to ride the same waves together. Wing foiling opens up so many possibilities!

What do you want or believe will significantly improve the wing foiling gear?

I'm very curious to find out about the harness I hear Kai Lenny is testing.

What tips or recommendations do you have for anyone who wants to start?

Just get out there!

What is your biggest water sport achievement?

Surfer with the biggest smile on his face:)
